Reading the energy numbers like a surveyor

Every replacement window sold in England carries a Window Energy Rating from A++ down, and building regulations require replacements to achieve at least a C rating or a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better. An A-rated uPVC double-glazed unit — low-E glass, argon fill, warm-edge spacer — meets the standard comfortably and is the sweet spot for most homes. Triple glazing pushes U-values towards 0.8, earning its premium on cold elevations, busy roads and bedrooms where noise matters. The frame matters as much as the glass: multi-chambered uPVC profiles, thermally broken aluminium or engineered timber each carry the glazing differently, and a written quote should state frame system, glass specification and the certified rating — not just 'A-rated' as a slogan.

The paperwork that protects you

Replacement windows are a controlled fitting under building regulations. A FENSA or CERTASS registered installer self-certifies the work and the certificate lands with your local authority — you will need it when you sell the house. Deposits should be protected by an insurance-backed guarantee scheme, and the workmanship guarantee should be separate from and additional to the manufacturer's sealed-unit warranty.
